What is a Current Transformer?

The high quality current transformer is a type of transformer used specifically for measuring alternating current in the power system. It typically consists of a primary winding which usually just a wire or busbar passing through the iron core and a multi-turn secondary winding which wound around a silicon steel core). The difference of current transformers with voltage transformers is that CTs are constructed to present a negligible load to the primary circuit, which can ensure the primary current remains practically unaffected. The current transformers are defined by their current ratio, such as 4000:5, meaning 4000 amperes in the primary produces 5 amperes in the secondary, which is commonly standardized at 1A or 5A for compatibility with meters and relays.

Working Principles

The working principle of a current transformer in stock is from electromagnetic induction, when the alternating current flowing through the primary conductor,the current will produce a varying magnetic field in the core. Then this magnetic field will induce a proportional current in the secondary winding. The ratio between the primary and secondary currents is determined by the number of turns in the secondary winding. For ensure accurate performance of the data, we must remain the core is within its linear magnetic region to avoid saturation, which can distort the output. Close coupling between the windings can ensure the secondary current faithfully represents the primary current over a defined range, even when the power equipments is under fault conditions.

The current transformets are widely used for metering and billing in commercial and industrial power supplies, especially revenue-grade CTs provide accurate current signals to watt-hour meters.

For the schemes of protection function, CTs supply current signals to protective relays to detect faults such as overloads or ground faults, this can isolate circuit rapidly.

And also, CTs are used in residual current devices like Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in residential and commercial installations to prevent electric shock by detecting imbalance between line and neutral currents.

The current transformers also extends to temporary measurements using split-core designs that can be installed without disconnecting the primary conductor.
